Pantai Morib coastal management 

 

Sea Wall at Pantai Morib

As drawing 1 and photo 1 shown above, the sea wall is falling apart and being eroded, which will definitely be less effective and efficient. Therefore continuous maintenance is compalusory, and also sand nourishment to give it a better base for the wall to be sustainable. However, there's a drainage pipe inside the sea wall which will make it weaker, it is good to be able to let off some water but the wall will be eroded very easily which in the end will need more money  to solve this issue.

 

Sea Wall advantage & disadvantage 

Sea wall is a man-made wall erected to protect the shore from tidal waves and thus prevent erosion and flooding, it also helps to protect human habitation and recreational activities from the sea waves. Sea wall reduces the wave energy by reflecting it back to the sea. This greatly reduces the energy and erosion of the existing coastline. The construction of a seawall provides for increased coastal defense besides providing opportunities for sightseeing and recreation. Seawalls are strong defenses that are durable even in increased energy environments and last longer than other engineering methods. Seawalls effectively control soil erosion and in extreme conditions, seawalls prevent loss of life and property by minimizing erosion. However, there's also a negative side of constructing a sea wall. The construction of seawalls can destroy the formation of intertidal beaches and wetlands that form naturally near the shoreline, it is also very costly.

 

Revetments at Pantai Morib 

As drawing 2 and photo 2 shown above, the sea water and wind is eroding the concrete surface away which some parts down there has fallen into pieces and is more flattened. It is not an ideal type of sea defence at Pantai Morib, although it’s cheap to maintain it is vert costly to build up. It is not very protective ones it gets eroded, and it also creates more issue such as unattractive sight. Ones the patterns on the concrete flattens out, it will turn out to be less effective and it will not provide much protection to the beach. 

 

Revetments advantage & disadvantage

Reventments are slanted structures build along cliffs. They can be made from concrete, wood or rocks. Cliff erosion is prevented as waves break against them with the reventment absorbing the energy. This are expensive to build but cheap to maintain. Like seawalls they also create a strong backwash.  

 

 

 

Mangrove advantage & disadvantage

Mangrove ecosystem is an assemblage of tropical trees and shrubs that inhabitant the coastal intertidal zone. It provides good & services to both the marine environment and people. It is a very good natural sea defence, because it would not harm the environment. Firstly, it serves as nurseries which helps species to grow, like shrimps,mollusk species, fishes…etc. Through that, the species also attracts tourist to visit. Mangrove’s wood tree is a special type of tree that resist to rot and insects, therefore it is also a material and fuel that indigenous people rely on for wood construction. However, most importantly, it is also a very good system of coastal protection. The dense root of mangrove forests trap sediments flowing down rivers and off the land, it stabilises the coastline and prevent erosion from waves and storms too. After clearing the sediments, mangrove forest also protect coral reefs, seagrass meadows from being smothered away.
